official poker rules
The official poker rules use a standard pack of playing cards, 52 cards (there are some poker games that uses more or less depending on the variations such as adding wild cards like jokers). The card ranking is as follows Ace (the highest), King, Queen, Jack, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 (the lowest), Ace (this may also be the lowest card depending on the variations you are using, but it is usually the highest). There are four suits (spades, hearts, diamonds and clubs). No suit is higher than another. All poker hands contain five cards, the highest hand wins. The use of Wild Cards depends on the variations, wild cards take on whatever rank or suit you want it to take. A wild card can either be a seperate card added like a joker or you may specifiy a certain card in the standard deck to be wild like dueces, or whatever else. The number of cards dealt is dependant on what type of game you are playing: 5 card stud, you are dealt five cards and 7 card stud, you are dealt seven. I know this is obvious, but I don't want anyone to get confused.

Most of the online poker rooms offer the same games, but there are some fun and interesting exceptions which I will introduce later. I've outlined the basic poker rules for the following online poker games below. All the online poker games I will be discussing are true poker games against real people - not Video Poker, Let it Ride Poker, or Caribbean Stud Poker which are poker games where you play against the house (and are a big underdog!). These poker games offered by the online poker rooms are all fun, can be played for free with play money, and are against other real people. Check out our online poker room reviews at the bottom of this page to pick and choose an online poker room to play at... for free! Before we get started, these are some official poker rules that apply to most all poker games. First of all, poker is a 5 card game. You may play in games that have 7 cards or 9 cards or whatever, but you always use only five cards to make your best poker hand.

Abstract:
Other work has shown that adaptive learning can be highly successful in developing programs which are able to play games at a level similar to human players and, in some cases, exceed the ability of a vast majority of human players. This study uses poker to investigate how adaptation can be used in games of imperfect information. An internal learning value is manipulated which allows a poker playing agent to develop its playing strategy over time. The results suggest that the agent is able to learn how to play poker, initially losing, before winning as the players strategy becomes more developed. The evolved player performs well against opponents with different playing styles. Some limitations of previous work are overcome, such as deal rotation to remove the bias introduced by one player always being the last to act. This work provides encouragement that this is an area worth exploring more fully in our future work.
